A few are - mostly, astronauts are pilots. There are some that are in research that go up as mission specialists, for a specific task, but generally, most are trained pilots or have a strong degree of mechanical awareness. Many experiments are 'conducted' from the ground, with directions from scientists sent up to astronauts for carrying out.

Not really - science is the discovery of - astronauts and persons who go to do work on the hubbles, cause bubbles and solve our troubles...these folk are mainly engineers and tradesmen with a craft - scientists are not so mechanically inclined. Astronauts fly the crafts and are the spoils of the earth. Scientists are the ones who give guidance into matters and manners and where to look and when.
