I had a leaking toilet which I fixed with replacing the flapper valve with a new Korky universal one.

But now, to get a full flush, I have to hold down the handle for about 5 seconds, rather than pushing and releasing as before.

I checked the chain length for the valve and only had slight slack. I adjusted it, but didn't fix it (it also made the water drain slightly in the bowl - thus making the toilet run again).

Any ideas?

UPDATE: I fixed it with a new Flushmaster flapper - the version that had a dial on to adjust how the flush will operate. Thanks!

Some times the universal flapper valve is not that universal. You might need the kind that has Styrofoam made into the flapper. These float when the lever is tripped and stay open longer, which is what you are looking to do. There are some that have a float on the chain and other that have an adjustment dial on the flapper that you set as needed. Also, check the water level in the tank to make sure it is set at the correct height.

I agree that it is an adjustment in the chain/strap that lifts the flapper. You may need to "play" with it to get the correct placement. It is irritating that so many companies are marketing "universal" flappers. You really should have purchased the same type you had before. Toilets are "engineered" to work a certain way with certain type parts. What seems like would be better, can also cause more problems. Good luck with your project.

Take the tank lid off and look at the chain that is attached to the flush lever and the rubber flap that seals the water from going into the bowl to flush, sounds like u need to shorten the chain so the flap goes up high enough to let the water into the bowl to flush without holding the lever down, chances are the flap is not reseating now to let the tank fill back up with water, just stick your hand in there and move it a bit till it seals and the water fill the tank back up. make sure u dont shorten the chain so much as it wont let the flap go all the way down to seal between flushing, but what u describe sounds like u could take a few links of chain out no prob, this should do it

bring the chain back one or two holes on the flush arm and see if that helps..the flapper is not being pulled all the way up

adjust the screw the connects to the ballcock(the device the stops the rise of water in the tank) it sometimes has an affect on that.
