Although Arod has been great among others (Ortiz, Mo, Vlad-so consistent) its hard to disagree that pitching and defense win championships, along with that clutch pitching; and with this thought process in mind I would have to say Johan Santana has been the best player over the past 5 years in the AL. After the allstar break and down the stretch when the games REALLY matter, with penant races hovering over pitchers heads, Johan just gets better. he is 40-4 post break over the last 5 years with a 2.07 ERA and a WHIP of 0.94, thats just obsurd. That's beyond dominant, the numbers speak for themselves. Not to mention hes got two cy youngs in that time. It's true he hasn't had all that much experience deep into the postseason, but in the experience hes had, hes still had a sub 3 era in the postseason, and if you take away one rough outing against the yankees (6er in 3innings - 2003) his post season era is 1.125.Arods numbers are insane as well, but at the end of the day I'd rather have an utterly dominant pitcher than a great slugger like arod. Of course these questions are all oppinion based, but I tihnk Johan's numbers make him hard to pass up as the right choice. good Q

I would say Arod and Manny Ramirez

Ramirez
Year Avg HR RBI R SB
2006 .321 35 102 79 0
2005 .292 45 144 112 1
2004 .308 43 130 108 2
2003 .325 37 104 117 3
2002 .349 33 107 84 0

Arod
Year Avg HR RBI R SB
2006 .290 35 121 113 15
2005 .321 48 130 124 21
2004 .286 36 106 112 28
2003 .298 47 118 124 17
2002 .300 57 142 125 9

No on else in the AL has really come close...

It is hard to compare pitchers but Santana has certainly been the best hurler...

Jeter's power numbers and rbis don't compare with the other two

Ortiz's avg. is not near the other two's consistency and his power numbers have only surged in the last 3 years, however they were good before that, just not excellent

Over the past five, or even the past three, it's gotta' be Alex Rodriguez. Love him or hate him, he's a monster. The only other who comes close is Manny Ramirez, who quietly puts up Hall of Fame numbers every season.

On the mound, it's Johan Santana. A couple of Cy Youngs, and a good shot at taking his third in 2007.

How can you not say A-rod, he does it all year after year and his numbers are just taken for granted by most fans. He is one of the few in MLB that if he has a year at 300-40-110 everyone thinks he had an off year.

A-Rod, Manny R., David Ortiz, Johan Santana, and Roy Halladay. All have been consistent.

Hands down Alex Rodriguez, and Santana for pitchers. Not to say there are no other good players though.
