I think the cartoon characters get special lessons where they learn to play with only 4 fingers on a hand instead of 5. There's a guy in Hollywood who specializes in this. I think maybe he keeps catnip, doggie bones and carrots around his school/studio. The animals get treats when the hit the right notes.

Of course, some characters (like Yosemite Sam, Bugs Bunny) just learn to pick and hunt with two fingers, and it sounds like it. When playing "Those Darling Young Men"(?) Bugs always hits the wrong note, no matter how many times I watch the cartoon. Yosemite gets it right but, of course, there's a contact switch for dynamite on that last note and he never learns either, even though he set it up. (Skippy the squirrel from Animaniacs even plays that same song but manages to never get blown up...)

Monty Python, of course, demonstrated how to get mice to squeak "3 Blind Mice" using a giant wodden mallet and a cage full of mice laid out in a row...
