Schumacher's statistics speak for themselves...

7 World Championships!!
91 Grand Prix victories
155 podiums
68 pole positions
1,369 points
76 fastest laps

Some people might argue that he has always had a fast competitive car and a great team behind him (Briatore, Walkinshaw, Brawn, Symonds and Byrne at Bennetton; and Todt, Brawn, Byrne, Costa, Martinelli and of course Stepney at Ferrari), but it takes much more than this to achieve as much as Schumacher has done.

Without a shadow of doubt, he is the greatest driver of the modern F1 era and some (including myself) might say the greatest Formula One driver of all time. Tragically we will never know if Ayrton Senna would have challenged him for that accolade, but what is certain is that Schumacher is a true meaning of the word "legend".

Lewis Hamilton is certainly young and talented enough to challenge Schumacher's records, but I still don't think that you can compare the two drivers. Hamilton may well become an F1 great, but I think it's too much to beat the best.

He WAS the best F1 driver in the world - he's retired now. I think Lewis Hamilton has a very good chance of beating Michael's records if he keeps on the way he's been doing (excepting for yesterday, of course). Only time will tell but Lewis seems to be quite single-minded with regards to his career so, if that is his goal there's every chance he will attain it.

Being the best driver doesn't necessarily mean winning loads of awards, there is a lot more to it,such as the way that you win ,the way that you pass etc etc. Most of the drivers out there today would win races if they were in the best teams cars,so the car the and the team come into the equation aswell.

He may be the best statistically, with records.... but I recall he had a tendency to crack under pressure, and start making mistakes locking wheels / driving into people when the likes of Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna (in the early stages of Schuey's career) + Juan-Pablo Montoya had a really serious go at trying to get past him.
