I just mean how are these dimensions normally expressed? Is there a convention for one coming before the other?

According to the screen settings on my computer, it says 1024x768. So it's width x height.

Also, you can look at the dimensions of any photos you have on your computer. To the others, if he was calculating area, you'd be right, it doesn't matter, but that's not what's being asked.

When is does matter, WIDTH is always specified first. Then HEIGHT, and lastly LENGTH.

Of course, the dimensions will equal the same in total, JLynes. But if you submit the specs to an art gallery, and they calculate the wall area needed... you will have a problem if they measure out all horizontal photos (11x8 inches) versus all vertical photos (8x11 inches). That creates the issue if you do not have the photos listed properly.

Doesn't matter. HxW always equals WxH. That's the commutative law: a+b=b+a, and ab=ba.
