why is it that sometimes even though our laptop still has a battery, it automatically shuts down?

Some older laptops, if they overheat, will shut down automatically so they wont damange the computer.

when the laptop gets low on battery the computer is set to shut off to save the battery. its unhealthy to run it out of juice. make sure you keep it with as much battery as possible.

There are power options settings under START, CONTROL PANEL, POWER.

They let you determine the time after which the disk drives, the monitor, and the computer shut down to conserve energy. Look over those setting and change which ever one annoys you.
