Well, an FOP (Fraternal Order of Police, the police union) sticker on the door wouldn't hurt.
If your apartment has an outside entrance, make sure it's well lit.
If you can have a dog at your apartment (especially a good watchdog), that's a good deterrent, too.
A good alarm system is great. If you can't get an alarm system, an alarm system sticker is better than nothing.
Basically, anything you can do to convince an intruder that it would be easier or safer to break into someone else's apartment will do the trick.

Dude, like, it sounds like you need to be careful who your friends are. Seriously though, just start with a prayer of protection daily & nightly.
1. Make sure that your message does not say I or this is. say we or someone will call you back.
2. Leave a radio or tv going when you are away.
3. Get a dog.
4. get an alarm system put on any questionable entry way.
5. keep a cell phone by your bed, under the bed, under the pillow each nite.
6. try not to do the same patterns daily.
7. if you have family, you may want to have them spend the nite a couple of nites at times, or at least come home with you after work a few times.
8. dont let people in your building know that you live alone.
9. think positive thoughts about the situation, don't let your friends terrible incidents cause you to have fear and doubt. learn from them, but dont dwell on them.
10. dont let mail pile up when you are away, get a fam member to house sit or pick your mail up.
11. dont put expensive boxes out on the porch like your laptop box or your stereo box. break the box down & put it in a garbage bag.

Use good common sense. Make sure you have taken every precaution against break-in. Your local law enforcement agency will be glad to tell you how and more. Keep a phone handy to make an immediate 911 call if needed. Do not live as though you have $$ or a lot of resources that someone might want. Play down your life. Make it real low key so no one thinks you have anything worth stealing. Make friends with your immediate neighbors and talk with them about what to do if there is a problem in your immediate vicinity. Example: What would you do if your neighbor was gone and something happened at their apartment? If I really wanted to break into your apartment I would need a reason such as theft, assault, etc. If I had no reason I wouldn't do it.

Having good dead bolt locks and locks for your windows. Also having sensor lights near where an intruder would try to approach.
Moving to a neighborhood where it's not as likely to happen but remember:
The power of suggestion is VERY strong, it's metaphysics.
Your thoughts can attract the very things that you fear.
So either you try to stay positive or move to a better neighborhood. Most people do not have bullet proof windows or doors.
You have to feel safe in your home.
You are not a victim. Don't let your thoughts make you become one.

Good locks makes good neighbors. Keep your mail picked up everyday. Put your lights and radio on a timer. Spend your money on a good locksmith who will help you safeguard your home. Get anti smashing devices for your doors. Put good locks on your windows, and after that is all done. Relax, say your prayers, and ask for guidance and protection. Enjoy your apartment and keep your valuable in line with the kind of neighborhood you live in. Remember, burglar and robbers work at their professions the same as you, so don't get too attached to stuff

Personally, you sound a little bit paranoid to me. But I am no psychiatrist. Also, you only "let people you know in" -- most murders are commited by someone you know or have had contact with in the past. An apartment is no target for a burglar in this day and age. Apartments are too well guarded and there are too many people around, and somone who doesn't belong there really sticks out like a sore thumb. So, why all the drama? Get on with your life and leave the melodramatics to someone else -- like someone in the rich part of town.

Always leave you tv on so some one will think you are either up, or home when you are not. Check your windows from out side at night can you see in? check your door before you open it to a knock. lock your door if your car or laundry or garbage is far enough awy for you to loose sight of it. Record a large dog barking and play it anytime you are afraid to open the door. put the local police on speed dial. If you hasver a sliding glass door put a board in the track when it is closed, even if it is locked. If you liver in a scary neighborhood put out the money to install bars.

You are a very wise person. One can never be too careful. First a well lit place and alarms if you can. Also, don't leave the door open and then go back to your car to get groceries-somebody can slip in during that time. Make sure you have good blinds and curtains so people can't look in. Never open the door unless you know for sure who it is. If there is no peephole, ask the landlord to get one put in. Also, get a roommate, it is always nice to have somebody there. However, make sure they are not careless with safety

Apts all look alike on the outside so don't flash lots of $ or have high end things (tv, laptop) in easy shot of windows and invite an intruder. Also if you have an answering machine say 'we' ar e not in or use the default answer so you don't advertise being alone.
Have you ever seen the discovry chanel show 'it takes a thief' ? Cool show and their sie has tons of info on making your home safe http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/ittakesathief/ittakesathief.html
Also, dogs are great companions, if you want a dog great but don't get one just for security.

You are overestimating your chances of becoming a victim of an intruder. Very few people get their homes broken into, and of those people who do get broken into many of them remain unharmed after their home has been intruded upon. Another thing you should keep in mind is that many people who have had a bugler break into their home were chosen because they did something that drew attention to their home as an easy target(i.e. leaving their door unlocked while there gone, hiding spare keys under a rug, ect). You are fine as long as you are smart and cautious and there is no reason for you to believe that you have to get an armed door man, a state of the art security system, and lock yourself in an armored room in order to be safe, you'll be ok :)
