I have a ten gallon empty tank and I am buying all new gravel, lighting, filteration, etc. I want a fish that's easy enough to find in most stores but different (unlike a betta, goldfish, tetra, molly, etc.)

All answers appreciated. Thanx~

Dwarf Puffers are not an easy fish to care for. They will only eat live or frozen food (never eat flake food). Also, there are no other fish you could keep with them. In a 10 gallon, you could only have 3 Dwarf Puffers that get about an inch long. Also, the tank would have to be amazingly planted with hundreds of hiding spots for the weaker Puffers. Instead, Try some Ram Cichlids or Kuhli Loaches. The Rams have spectacular coloration and you could keep 2 pairs (two males and two females) with some other small schooling fish (Tetras are the best options for tankmates : ). Kuhli Loaches are a striped eel-like fish displaying alternating orange and black stripes. You could keep about 4 of them in a 10 gallon and you would see them quite often. Also, be sure to provide hiding spaces. Good luck!

Congrats on your new tank! I would probably get a heater as it will open your range of fish drastically, i am not sure of any readily available fish that will go in a cold water 5 gallon tank. You have a lot of options with a heater though, you can go with a betta, i currently have a betta in my 10 gallon planted tank, these fish are colorful as you probably have already noticed, and they are quite responsive to their owners, every time i go to my tank it rushes to the top and swims in front of my begging for food. You could even throw some shrimp in there if you wanted. You can also get a dwarf groumie, they are very interesting fish, they only get about 2.5 inches and are really colorful, they will also respond to you as well, i had a groumie and it wasn't myfavoritee fish but other people say they are great. You could also get a couple of dwarf platties, they stay small around 1.5 inches, they are really colorful and they are responsive to you and will be a great pet, i have several regular platties in a 30 gallon tank and they also rush to greet me when ever i walk up to the tank. Another more exotic option could be a Dwarf puffer fish, they only get about an inch long, but they are awesome fish and have alot of personality. Just somthing to think about if you can get your hands on them :) some suggestions, would be to get plants, java moss and java fern are awsome low light plants, but will grow in any lighting really, all fish enjoy them. Also if you can, a bigger tank is always a good idea, even a 10 gallon will open your options greatly! Sounds like you have done some of your homework already, however what ever fish you decide on getting, do as much research as you can, it will provide a good background information and may even tell you some common problems that the fish may be prone too. Hope this helps, and good luck on your new tank

A honey-sunset dwarf gourami and some celestial rasboras which are beautiful and all small and tropical. Try a Gold "mystery" snail and 3 Asian algae shrimp for algae control. They only reach 1.5 inches each. That covers it: beautiful/ easy/ small/ attainable/ uncommon/ compatible/ variety. Jelly bean parrotfish have had their slime coat scraped off and their scales etched with acid dye for a temporary pretty effect that kills about 75% of the fish who go through it. Also they are too large for a 10. Puffers eat live food and are brackish and that's not a good choice for a first fishtank. Albino clawed frogs also eat live fish and anything their own size including their own kind. Khuli loaches hide in the gravel a lot so you rarely see 'em.

i have done a 10 gallon tank with butterfly fish. they look like they are swimming upside down so if you dont have a cover on the tank i have arranged a mirror on an angle so you can se the fish in the mirror now appearing to be right side up. its a pretty cool display and actually got the idea from the mystic aquarium in CT. here is link to get an idea of what i am talking about http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/miscellaneous/butterfly.php

get a dwarf puffer with an albino frog dont get jelly bean fish there are two types of fish that have that name one is a tetra that needs to be kept in groups of 10-15 with lots of swimming space the other is a parrot fish that requires 75 gal as you can see both are to much for ur tank and not to mention expensive

Well you are extremely limited, but i will tell you DONT GET A GREEN SPOTTED PUFFER, they are very very active fish that a 29g itself by him in it by himself will get him bored, and they grow 6"

That said, try to invest on a 20g+ it will be more fun and is easier to control the ammonia and nitrites.

Well, If you would like something different, then you would probably need a bigger tank. If you really want it, try some Kuhli Loaches, they are almost snake looking things and try some rainbowfish with their beatiful colors. I recommend you going to the pet store and deciding for your self.
