Believe MKV is a streaming video format, and not supported by Movie Maker.
If you search, you may be able to find a progam which can capture an MKV file and save it as an AVI, MPG, WMV, or other format that Movie Maker uses.
Check http://download.com to see if they have any MKV converters.

What the above user is saying is you must first convert the file from .mkv to .wmv or mpeg format before WIndows Move Maker will be able to read it.

you can't. .MKV is not a supported format for windows movie maker. The following formats are supported:
asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv
Convert your file to one of the formats though I don't recommend mpg or mpeg as they do not work well with windows movie maker.
Go to www.download.com and do a search for video converters. If you want something free, use the advanced search to narrow down your search and find free softwares only or go to www.freewarefiles.com and do a search there.
