My fiance and I have been contemplating moving to the west coast....and so far San Fran seems like the ideal city for us. We are vegan and would love to live in a city where people are kind...and accepting. How far exactly is San Fran from the ocean? Just want some more infor from people who live or have visited there. Thanks!

well if you do eventually come to The Bay, as a local, you'll be calling it SF, The City or San Francisco, not San Fran, lol. Sf is amazing, it is quite beautiful, and there is so much to do and amazing food, which makes i one of the most visited tourist spots in the world. if you are leaning left politically...i'd venture a look into Berkley, which pretty much is heart of California healthy living. it is very down to earth, and a ton of people there are vegetarians and vegans, offering food to cater to people of those crowds. Berkeley is left leaning but for the most part it is about free expression, and so it may sometimes seeem daunting is is quite beautiful and for th emost part people are quite accepting and quite intelligent.

,Raised in SF from 1yr old, have lived worked there for the past 50 years. I will try to answer without being a wiseguy...I am tempted. First, SF is the Ocean. SF is a tiny city in area, it is actually a Peninsula, very nearly an island. You are surrounded by the Pacific and SF Bay. It is the Western and Southwestern districts of SF (Richmond, Sunset, ParkMerced) which face the ocean. The SF Bay is SF's Eastern/Southeastern border. SF Bay and the mighty Pacific meet (basically) at the GG Bridge. As for being a Vegan...are you joking? Accepted? In SF? Lady, you could be elected to office in SF if you convinced everybody you WERE A VEGETABLE. You would, of course, have to throw in some sex life type thing,( you only do Turnips,) or whatever, and join any group which recognizes straight, white, Christian Males as the root of all evil. It's required. ***EDIT: For my Buddies, such as Tonalc 1: I just completed 25 years in Civil Service (FD) in SF. In those 25 years I accumulated 0 complaints or negative remarks from any citizen. ZERO. With contacts of 10 to 20 runs a day. Persons of every possible race, creed or belief. In doing said service, I received 6 or 7 surgeries for injuries and ultimately Cancers. I'd do it all again. You might not appreciate my sense of humor or that I base my responses on a hard, cold 911 reality....but I am not the jerk you think. I know SF as a native, and as a Medic, and a Firefighter. It is you, sir, that live in your "reality" while others work hard to quickly clean up and remove from the citizens eyes the actual suffering and weeping that SF does on a daily basis...while it parties on and on and on. ***Vegan Chick...NO! Do not be scared! SF is the same as any other metropolis. It is a Gem! Come here, and see to it that You help to make it a better place.

San Francisco, CA is 7 x 7 miles, on 3 sides it's water! Half is about 1/3 is the Pacific Ocean and 2/3 is the bay.

the other side is land. We're separated from the south bay by some hills and often ideology!

vegans are all about! Vegetarians too. Many are carnivores, but most of us are just healthy omnivores.

You can live a happy life here eating in real restaurants and still staying vegan! You can shop at vegan stores, and join vegan clubs.

The farmer's markets are all over the bay area. Great produce at good prices.

I hope you aren't frightened off by some of the wise-guys here... I decided to be nice... but I'm a wise-guy too!

San Francisco itself is on a bay, San Francisco Bay, that feeds into or out of the Pacific Ocean. Depending on where in SF you live, you will be close to the ocean and can smell it most of the time, as in good salty smell, not icky. As far as being vegan, there are few lifestyles that San Francisco has not seen, so you shouldn't make much of a difference there.

Ignore rer348.

SF has lots of vegans/vegetarians. Here's a list of the some of the many veggie restaurants in town:

And here's the SF Vegetarian Society:

SF is on the ocean on its west coast, and is surrounded by the Bay.
