I have a 98 Chevy Cavalier and it doesn't want to go in reverse especially on a hill or a slope. I was wondering what could be wrong with it before I took it to a transmission shop. Does anyone have any ideas?

It goes into gear when you hit reverse it's just when you give it gas it doesn't want to move so if you are on a slope forget about it.

it is more than likely the transmission. My boyfriend had a 90-something Honda Civic hatchback that he was trying to fix up for a while... and it didn't go in reverse, lol. I was going to drive it, but all the money we would have put in to fix it wouldn't of been worth it when it just broke in a couple years. The first day we had a potential buyer, the starter froze.. so we just let it get towed, lol. :(

OK, I'll bite. Is the transmission standard (stick shift) or is ot automatic?
Standard: there may be a reverse interlock, in which case it may be malfunctioning, or
the reverse gear may be "burred", ie, has a lot of rough surface, making it difficult to shift.
Auto: Also may have an interlock. You may need to depress the brake before it will shift to reverse.
Can't speculate any more without knowing if it is std or auto.

numerous talk approximately torque! base line is, petrol and diesel engines are comparable in terms of person involvement. the two have clutches, and in case you want to pass backwards you gotta drop it in opposite and allow the seize out precisely the comparable as in any petrol vehicle. Your pal is in reality thoroughly mad. if the vehicle became creeping in opposite the dozy sod had the seize engaged. there is fairly no different answer. Doesnt remember if its have been given adequate to torque to pull the eiffel tower, if the seize is in it ain't going everywhere! in case you force any petrol or diesel vehicle they have creep in first or opposite equipment in case you permit the seize up. Small engined petrol automobiles are patently extra at possibility of stalling nonetheless. you would be troublesome pushed to stall a three litre petrol.
