some do and some don't. many jurisdictions now require that to not rent to someone with a record, the landlord must identify a reason that is associated with the nature of the crime. for instance, if you have been convicted of burglery and you apply to live in a multi-unit property, the case might be that you would pose a higher risk to other tenants. but if you were convicted of tax evasion, that doesn't pose a clear increased risk to other tenants or the landlord. I see some flaws in those laws on both sides of the argument, but they are what I understand the current situation to be in those jurisdictions that provide any protection to people with criminal records. the rest will allow a landlord to refuse to rent to people with a criminal background, but would generally expect them to search every tenants background and treat everyone the same.

Yes. They have every right to do so. They can run credit checks, police checks, etc. They own the buildings, and have a right to restrict who lives there, for the safety of everyone else. And if the new tenant is a former sex criminal, they will know it, because the other tenants have a right to know. Plus, the sex offender's address has to be updated on the National Sex Offender Registry, so everyone knows where they live, and that the new residence falls within the restrictions (closeness to schools, daycares, etc.).

Every Appartment complex is different. The one I live in did not run any checks credit or background. But I was interviewed and honest. If They ask you Than you should tell them otherwise if the run the check anyway you could lose your place to stay. Good luck

Most places just run a credit check. Really high-brow places might have more of an application process, so it's not totally absurd. In the place my sister lives she had to have proof of her income, and the amount of her rent couldn't be greater than 30% of her income. So I guess they can throw in whatever stipulation they want.

I don't know, but I would guess they might run a credit check to see if they will get paid. Chances are if they have had trouble with the law, they have had trouble with money. Only guessing.

if you're uk based the crb - criminal records beureau - only accepts searches from certain bodies for certain purposes...otherwise you will be asked to make the search yourself and present the certificate or get it mailed straight to them...
stil, if you're saying 'apartment' and not 'flat' you're prob us based huh? will be interested to see whose data is better protected - us or uk!
