maybe it's a minus one or karaoke format & you accidentally switched it so the music off so you only hear the vocals.
but seriously, i think it's called an a cappella song.
a = a manner of
cappella=chapel
singing w/o instrumental / music is said to be the style of church / chapel music way long before any of us are born.
