I am currently under investigation for security clearance to work for DOD. I was selected for the job but have to get clearance. I wanted to know how long it will take to complete. I have heard up to 4 months and as long as 6. Anyone who has been through it let me know.

It could be the time frame you state. I can offer you this advice. Do not stop your job search while waiting for the response on your clearance. There are jobs out there if you look in many agencies and while you are waiting, a better opportunity may slip by.

I have been involved with the hiring process at a federal agency and we have lost several good candidates to other agencies while waiting for clearances to be completed. That is the way it goes. There are so many clearance requests that go to OPM that the backlog may never be reduced.

Good luck to you!

Depends on the level of clearance, how much stuff you have in your background, and how backed up OPM is.

A secret clearance takes a lot less time than a top secret. During the time I worked in a security organization, I saw clearances take anywhere from a couple of months to almost two years. I guess the norm was probably between 8 months and a year for a top secret.

Clearance for what level? It makes a huge difference. A Top Secret SCI takes a lot longer than a Secret.

Normally, you'll be granted a provisional clearance at some point prior to the actual completion of the investigation.
