Dose it say anything about class or is it just a personal style thing?.....are you really suppose to??

Old learned behavoir from good ol' grand dad??

I'm not saying it is unattractive or anything, I don't particulary care, I'm just curious.

It is to soak up the sweat and because a nice soft cotton undershirt feels much better next to our sweaty, hairy skin than does a starchy, rough dress shirt.

It is becoming somewhat of an "old school" practice, but if you ever see a man with a dress shirt on, he should have an undershirt beneath it.
This practice is especially common in warmer climates - the undershirt will protect the dress shirt from sweat stains (which look super tacky). The standard is universal, though and I all men should wear them when they dress up.
These days, it does show class...if a man wears a shirt beneath his dress shirt, you know that he was reared to dress traditionally.
(as the one poster said, men who don't wear undershirts look a little suspect to me).

I usually don't wear an under shirt. I have to wear a dress shirt and tie every day, but I don't sweat, ever. Also, I think it looks a little goofy wearing a white shirt with an undershirt showing through.

It is a combination of them all but the big thing is that it was done to cover the body and prevent flesh from being exposed--in short it was the epitome of decency, tank style (now referred to in some areas as wife beaters) replaced the classic tee but the desired result was still achieved

i hope this answers your question

Actually a guy has told me about this, completely unprompted. He said it looks sloppy not to. Like at work the managers have to wear long sleeve button-ups and he can't stand it when managers don't have a white shirt under, he says they look like child molestors.

Every guy I know wears a tanktop under their regular shirt. I think they do it because its the style. Also because if its hot, they have a under shirt under it that isnt as big as the regular one. I personally think its hot!

you have to wear an undershit under a button down dress shirt because it absorbs moisture and hides tattos and my mipples from showing! lol .... also, it keeps the armpit smell down...

lol you asked!

PS guys can also wear a long sleave shirt under a short sleave shirt for style...
