How long does an employee has to give to his employer before quiting her job.
I have worked for six years in my fiance's uncle's company and now i want to leave the office and set up something for myself.

There's no legal requirement to provide notice at all. However, some companies have employment agreements that encourage employees to give notice. For example, I once had an agreement that if I didn't provide 2 weeks notice, I would have to pay for any company training I received in the past 12 months.

Two week notice is a good practice.

Some employers will take offense to the notice of an employee leaving the company and may tell them to get their stuff and leave that day. If this is the case then you were best to find work elsewhere anyway.

Generally 2 weeks, but I'm sure if you talk to your boss directly you can work out a plan with what works best fot you both. Sometimes places will ask for a little longer, and I know some places that asked for a few days less because of the way the pay schedule works, etc. As long as you're both in agreement. At least 2 weeks is the polite, responsible thing to do

Unless your contract stipulates a time scale , I always thought it was common practise to give the amount of notice as to how regular you are paid.
IE: paid weekly - one weeks working notice.
: paid monthly - one months working notice.

IMO,I would test the water.
I would have a private word with your fiance's Uncle explaining your intentions. And Ideally your intentions would be to leave (Again unless contract stipulates) preferably by the end of the week.
If he throws his toys out of the cot and sulks, Then say you would be prepared to stay a fortnight ( only so he has time to find a replacement).

What-ever you do , don't burn your bridges. Leave on amicable terms. You may need to go back at some point for references etc......

It depends what is in your contract. If you do not have a contract legally you do not have to give notice, but this would be awkward seeing as it is a member of the family you work for. The best thing would be to come to some agreement with your employer, i would say one month was fair

Depends entirely on your contract. Have a look at the termination of employment section and it will be all there in black and white.
Also if you don't have a contract, but have worked there for more than 6 months, you're counted as a permanent member of staff and will have the same notice period as everyone else

It depends whether you have a contract or not with your fiance's uncle. If you do, then read it to find the period of notice you must give. If you do not, you can leave at any time.

Some places are 2 weeks, other places base it on the number of years you've been working, I assume because the longer you've been working the more complicated it is for you to quit because of all the work you do.

But since it's family, talk to your boss, tell him you want to quit and ask him to look into hiring someone, whom you can help to train before you leave. This is just courtesy mostly.

Typically 2 weeks for support positions - secretaries and the like. At least 30 days for management.
