If you are from England, I don't think you will find Copenhagen very expensive. You can allways find cheap decent restaurants with the main meal for under 100 danish kr (9 english pounds). Beers are probably the same as in England, about 50-70 danish kr (4,5 - 6 english pounds) for a half liter depending on the place. If you are just looking for a snack you can get a great danish hotdog for about 25 danish kr (2.25 english pounds).

I stayed at hotel Nebo http://www.nebo.dk/eng/index.htm , it was small but clean, and very centrally located - right next to the main train station and the charming walking streets of Copenhagen. Their economy rooms are cheap, and you get a discount for booking online.

There is nothing cheap in Copenhagen, I don't care what anyone says. I have been to many other places in Europe and I live in Denmark on the West Coast. Eating lunch for US$20 is expensive is you compare to Paris where you can have a decent lunch off the beaten path for 8 to 10 Euros or even less if you're willing to have a ham and cheese melt with some frenchfries. The cheapest you can expect realistically for a hotel room in CPH is about US$80 a night. Do your homework and reserve early. Christmas and New Year get a little crowded there, although I haven't had to stay in a hotel around that time, I have friends there. Thanksgiving weekend can be a bargain though on airfare which would help you with budgeting. I have added a few sites that could help you make an educated decision based on what other users have found in their stays. Also Copenhagen's visitor's bureau has a site and something they have good "tilbud" (specials in danish). It's a pretty city. Have fun and be safe.

PS: Any hotel around the main train station (Hovedbanegård) will be cheaper by CPH standards but I can't say anything about cleanliness, there are conflicting reports. A friend of mine stayed at Dan Hostels in the dormstyle accomodations and it's OK but it's still pretty stiff when you think that in some countries you can stay in a 3/4-star for $100 a night. Hope this helps.

I have been in Copenhagen in June, in Cab Inn Scandinavia Hotel (Vodroffsvej 55, DK-1900 Frederiksberg C, Tel.: (+45) 35 36 11 11, Fax: (+45) 35 36 11 14, www.cabinn.com). 70 euro per day. It's quite clean, but not nice, because the rooms are very small, in IKEA's style. Food is expensive and not diverse. The citizens like to save on everything, so if you will eat in cheap restaurant you should clear the table by yourself :-(

The town is very difficult to get around in due to being built around the canals. There are times when you can actually see the building that you want to go to and can't get there.
Try the Peter Lieps Hus Restaurant for good food and people watching.
for sleeping try Carstens Appel. Its a very cool place that is more like apartments than anything else and the price is right. Half the fun is stumbling on hidden restaurants and gallerys. I'm envious!
