They are big and stupid. They have no gas mileage. They get like 18 miles a gallon compared to 28 in the average car. So why do people get them, do they enjoy stopping to fill up for gas and empty their pockets every mile?

'Cause they think it makes look big and powerful on the roads.
My neibour had one, and they think it gives them the right to yell at people who park in 'their' parking space.
When in reality, they have a garage and the space just happens to be out side of their house.

If thye crash, the person iin the SUV is going to do so much more damage to car and passenger in the average car than if an average car hit aan average car.

The biggest reason why people get SUV's is because they have families or they need to tow. If they have a family, that means they need a lot more space than a car or something else and that also means they will travel and go on vacations too. Also, they might need a vehicle to hold a family of 4 or 5 AND tow a boat or another car. A mini-van might be an other alternative, but isn't as spacious and power as an SUV. SUV's are also very safe too.

Well, they aren't really stupid. If you think about them, besides the gas mileage, they are quite beneficial. My boyfriend is planning to sell his Honda Prelude, to get a Tahoe.. And it excites me. Especially since one day we will have kids, we have ideas of traveling, if we had to tow stuff, it wouldn't be a problem.. and hell, they are great for when you go grocery shopping!

Now, I don't really see the point to a young kid having one (i.e. just some teenager). Because then that's where they get stupid. They think because they have some badass, big car.. they get stupid with it. Now that I am in a relationship, much more mature, and have a future ahead of me.. I definitely understand the benefits of having an SUV. Not all people do, but the ones who want one or already have one.. do =)

If you can afford to have one, then I see no problem with it. Someone making minimum wage could definitely not afford one, but someone who is well-off,and successful in life can most definitely handle having one :)

Not everyone has to like everything that everyone else does. That would just be boring ;)

I hate SUVs, but I understand that they sometimes have practical purposes. Their four-wheel drive makes them safer when the roads are icy because they have more power. Along those same lines, if you drive up in the mountains or something all the time, SUVs are better at navigating the terrain. They can seat like 7 people (have you ever seen a car do that?). And finally, they have great towing capacity.

But I'm never in need of any of those things listed so I stick to my little car :)

I own an SUV (Ford Escape, which is anything but big) and I bought it because I need a vehicle that has four wheel drive, and is high enough to drive over the snow in the winter (November through April) because our road commission takes about 4 days to get my road plowed in the winter, and MDOT (Michigan) takes forever to get the freeways salted.. Plus, I need a vehicle that can haul computers and camping equipment, as well as a small boat.

As for fuel mileage, My Escape gets 25mpg and my sister's Mariner gets 24mpg. Which brings me to the point: What about people with high powered cars and trucks that get around 10 mpg?

I prefer my SUV big time over a mini-van. There's me, my husband and our 4 kids in the family. If we want to go anywhere we can all fit in our Durango just fine with room left! You have to look at it this way: We could drive 2 vehicles to our destination or we can drive just one. The Durango is also rear-wheel drive therefore we can also tow our boat with it. The convenience is well worth the extra expense in gas rather than drive 2 vehicles. When purchasing, just don't buy the one with the biggest gas-guzzling engine in it. When it comes down to driving to work, I drive my S-10 instead which gets incredible gas mileage. We just drive the Durango when the whole family wants to go out. We could even fit the in-laws in it if we wanted. It's just much nicer.

Well I have 3 kids and a wife, so all small cars are out of the question.

How dfo you rate a Blazer or Envoy as BIG?????

The Hummer / ford Excurtion / and Ford V10 is the waste of time.....and money and gas.......

I live in Northern Michigan where 4x4 is a necessity and the 4 door SUV is the best option I have.

They keep my family safe and we can all go in 1 vehicle together.

Try that with your GREEN car

thats not fair! i'm not stupid! although suv's don't get the best gas mileage---i have one because we live in the country, and sometimes need 4 wheel drive. also, they are no worse than a stationwagon, or (big) van. if you have a big family, or need the 4 wheel drive--to each his own!
the car makers are now making suv, on car chassies, with 4 wheel drive...what about 18 wheelers? are you going to bash them too? or do they benifit you on some way?????

I don't need much gas mileage, I live ten minutes from my job. I refill my tank every other week. But, I only really use my jeep for going to work, moving stuff and bad weather driving. When me and the wife go out, we take her car which does get much better mileage. It gives us more options and works out great.

It is good to live in a Nation where everyone can have their OWN opinion. It is also good to live in a Nation where one has the right to free speach, so, I ask, What is it to YOU what I CHOOSE to drive? Do you pay ANY of my bills associated with MY vehicle of choice? If I have a NEED for the vehicle I choose to drive(here in a FREE Country), What is it to YOU? I think folks that drive around in those tiny death-traps you call economy cars are folks with a desire to sue auto manufactures' when they are involved in a crash, and someone gets seriously hurt, opportunistic sue-crazy people who would love to dictate to the rest of us WHAT we do, Where we do it,and HOW we do it! BUT, that is just my opinion, and does not constitute the attitude of (necessarily) of those around me, Good day!

not everyone that has a big vehicle is being wasteful. Some of us have boats that we tow on the weekends, or other large trailers. If you don't like the bigger more comfortable vehicles, then don't buy one.
Thats why they make lots of different sizes , for lots of different applications and uses.
