It means literally, as per Oxford Dictionary, to manipulate a
situation etc to gain advantage.
A person who applies this practice is known as a gerrymanderer.

Thanks to Patonroan &Cmdrbnd007.
I accept that gerrymander originates to manipulate the boundaries of( a constituency etc )so as to give undue influence to some party or class, with Governor Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, on a historical basis.
However,it also relates to:
manipulate a situation etc, to gain advantage.
Also, in Roget's Thesaurus context:
gerrymander,interpreted as 698, to be
cunning & 930 improbity, underhand dealing,under-the-counter dealing, sharp practice, backdoor influence.

A gerry is a thing man use to put under your bed to pee in if too idle to walk to the Loo. What has that got to do with the McCanns since they use the loo if they need to pee at night?

Gerrymandering refers specifically to the redistricting of states after a political party has won an election. It is used to create a district that is now more aligned politically to the party in power.

You are correct with the meaning but you have failed to say that it is a American political terminology where one party moves the boundaries to suit themselves to gain an advantage at the polls.

My dictionary says it is "To divide (a geographic area) into voting districts so as to give unfair advantage to one party in elections."
So, this word can be misinterpreted & misunderstood... Just like Gerry McCann.

If it walks like an obsessed bigot and rants like an obsessed bigot then it probably is an obsessed bigot.
If someone rants on without no proof then it means he has got no proof.
Yes the McCanns were neglectful in leaving their child alone that night.
That, (without PROOF to the contrary) is where it begins and ends.
Well for people not signed up for the current hate campaign it does.

It usually applies to politicians. I can't see what advantage the McCann bloke has gained though.
