I'd recommend that you download the latest version of Windows Media Player from-
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/

If some videos don't play on the windows media player, then the problem would mostly be because your computer doesn't have the video codecs required to play that video. A video codec is a device or software that enables video compression and or decompression for digital video. The compression usually employs lossy data compression.

If the videos aren't playing, I suggest you download a complete Codec packakge like XP Codec Pack from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm
XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec pack which helps you to play all major audio and video formats. Go to http://www.free-codecs.com/ for more codecs.

It is possible that you need to update the software. The other issue is that it might not have the proper codec to view the video. A codec is a basically a decoding key for compressed items such as video and audio. If you need a codec try googling the extension of the files you are trying to open such as .avi (which may requrie teh divx codec) or .mov (which is a quicktime format).

Hope this helps.
