I suggest you check out non profits, who are the recipients of most housing grants. Check out Habitat for Humanity.
Also visit the Nehemiah Corp as they have a downpayment assistance program for qualified lenders http://www.getdownpayment.com/
The Housing and Urban Development in their Grants Available page makes it clear that they do not provide grants to individuals -- hence no grants for a person to buy a home http://www.hud.gov/grants/index.cfm
"While HUD does not offer direct grants or loans to individuals, we do work through local governments and non-profit organizations to make financial assistance and counseling available."
You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two FREE sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.
Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.
Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Good luck. The government and foundations do not give grants for personal use. Most grants are designed to satisfy some requirement of the granting organization. For example, I received a $20,000 to fund faculty and student exchanges between a US and Croatian university. To get the grant, I also arranged to have my university provide matching funds. Grants may be given to undertake a certain line of research, to build a hospital, to start a drug rehabilitation clinic, etc. You have to submit a request that satisfies all the criteria and hope for the best. If you get the grant you have reporting requirements to make sure the funds are used properly.
If you find someone to give you money to buy a house, let me know. I want to add an indoor swimming pool to my house.

There are essentially only 3 sources for grants.
Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at:
http://www.sbirworld.com
There is also info on this site about how to apply.
Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with City Hall.
Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at http://www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.

relies upon the place you reside. In NZ, confident. In oz, you would be waiting to get some government funds to help with incidental costs *if* you sign in as a house educator. I *think of* you may in areas of Canada too yet there the money is tied on your following the government's curriculum etc. the utmost volume obtainable is constrained to 300 money a 300 and sixty 5 days. you're in no way going to make funds out of homeschooling; or perhaps the place government delivers do exist they won't come on the edge of overlaying the fee of any further centers (physio, speech treatment etc) that your disabled new child desires, no longer in case you reside in a rustic the place you pays for such centers fairly than getting them by making use of way of your u . s .'s public healthcare equipment.
