Usually this is a network driver issue. Go to "My Computer" and right click. Then Click properties -- click the Hardware Tab -- and Device Manager. If you see "OTHER DEVICES" with yellow tags on them you need to reload the correct drivers for those devices.

Drivers can usually be obtained from the computer manufacturers website or come with the CD's that came with the computer. You can also find most of them at
http://drivers.com

Once those drivers are installed you LAN will reappear.

You're not giving enough information to be able to help you.

Was her computer using a Dial-up modem or a DSL or Cable "modem" to connect to the Internet?

Was her system connecting via a wireless router or directly to the Cable or DSL "modem"?

....additionally, make sure you are in the same Workgroup.
(right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, chose COMPUTER NAME tab, use the CHANGE button if it is not the same as the others in your LAN)

If the machine is using wireless, also make sure that the SSID matches that of the router.
