This is a theoretical question. All the countries must border each other.

No more than 4 countries can all have borders with each other. Presuming that touching at a single point is not defined as 'bordering'. Two countries border each other, then are surrounded by a third, except for one segment of the surrounding country which is a fourth country which completes the encriclement of the two original countries, and borders both.

China and Russia have the most neighboring countries with 14 neighbors each.

China borders Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.

Russia borders Azaerbaijan, Belarus, China, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, North Korea, Norway, Poland, and Ukraine. (This list includes the two countries that border Kaliningrad - Poland and Lithuania. Otherwise, Russia has 12 neighbors.)

the maximum number of countries which can all have borders with one another is 4, imagine 3 square shaped countries and arrange them to form a pyramid e.g. let [=] denote a country:
e.g.[=]
....[=][=]
this shows that all three are touching, now by drawing a circular shaped country around these three, all four countries will be touching each other :)
there are plenty of other formations possible with four countries, but four is the max :)

Map printers find 4 colours of ink enough to ensure that neighbouring countries are different colours.........

...so the maximum nuber of countries that can share a border with each of the others is 4

Rosie Recipe is partially correct. Generally only 4 colours are needed on political maps, but this only because the "touching" countries don't touch each-other.
Otherwise - infinite.

It is not infinite but uit could be in the billions if the countries were like 100 yards long and one huge one i nthe midle

Theoretically, there is no maximum number.

2007-07-23 05:22:36 · answer #8 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Infinite, if they are all touching at a single point.
