Great question!
I think the world would be better if more people embraced the elements that are common to all religions (i.e., the Golden Rule), and let go (or at least lightened up) on the tenets that divide them ("our savior/prophet/etc. is the TRUE savior/prophet/etc.").
Ben Franklin once said, "I think vital religion has always suffered when orthodoxy is more regarded than virtue. And the scripture assures me that at the last day we shall not be examined on what we thought but what we did...that we did good to our fellow creatures. See Matthew 25."
For Christians, I would add Matthew 16:27 as well.
Again, great question - it's important to think critically about these issues.

I think you have to look at both sides. While religion today, particularly the Islamics, one can make the argument that it is an horrendous thing. But, looking back not too far, remember Stalin. An atheist that was responsible for 40 million deaths of his own people. Mao, an atheist was responsible for at lease 50 million, and that's conservative, deaths of his own people. Then you have Pol Pat. Another 10 million.
So in the modern world, I don't see religion being the destruction of modern society. With the exception of the Muslims.
While the Catholic church is being held accountable for the abuses they tolerated, I don't paint with a broad brush all of them. Far from it.
No, I think evil knows no religion. Or lack of. It is simply there.
By the way, I am an atheist.

In my opinion, religion is about control. I do not believe in religion and never will. However spirituality is a different story, you can be spiritual without following a religion. I follow my own personal spiritual beliefs, and I will not follow any specific "religious" belief. This is how I think it should be for everyone, you should choose which path feels right to you. Spirituality is NOT a one size fits all.

Religion is the only thing keeps some people on the righteous path in life, so how can it be better if there is NO religion?

yes you are right...but it's not so much the "Almighty" i have a problem with... it's some of his followers...
Having said that, if religion helps people, then that has to be a good thing too...
...to each their own...

Religion gives you something more to believe in. Without it, people would lose all faith and the other 47% of the population would be on prozac.
