I wonder if one could make his/her own philisophy like that of pioneer thinkers of education like Socrates "Knowledge is virtue", Plato "social justice", Locke "tabula rasa", Herbart "doctrine of appreciation", John Dewey"Education is Life" and etc. If you were to have one what philsophy would it be?

Education is a serious business. The idea is seek knowledge and delve deep to get the correct knowledge and impart this knowledge to those who seek it.

My daugher is a Golden Apple winner (Ill.) and she has wonderful attitudes and philosophies about teaching. She believes it is her job to reach each student, encouage them, understand they have a life outside of school, which can be wrought with problems. She believes making the task fun. She's creative and inventive and finds new ways to teach a difficult lesson. The students need to respond to her commands (for example, in order to gain control of a noisy classroom, she simply turns out the lights for a moment, and they know she means business). The students must be able to approach the teacher without fear of reprimand. No questions are stupid. She is approachable and friendly and understanding. The students must respect her instructions and ask if they don't understand. The education institution must be responsive to parents concerns, the student's concern and the teacher's concerns. They must provide a safe environment with the supplies and equipment needed. These are just a few ideas.

I have learned through salvaging- though not really taking credit for the success -soldiers who were cast off and dismissed by the Army, that there truly is no such thing as a bad soldiers- there are bad leaders and soldiers who have been failed by them.
This may seem not to apply to learning and teaching at first but most of leadership IS teaching/instruction.
I believe in getting to know my students/soldiers and tailoring the lesson plan or battle drills to individual strengths, weaknesses and opportunities to have character building experiences.
It takes more time and is more labor intensive and is more "personally involved" but to anyone who accuses me of that I would ask of them, "are we NOT investing in the future of our students/soldiers?" And is there a limit at which you would stop and deny someone the ability to succeed?
Using P.C. language, I call my educational/training philosophy, "the screw up program" because I think the people who are the most unique and rebellious simply have to be related to, have their trust won over and then you're in the position to borderline exploit their personalities to both of your benefits.
There is no such thing as "if I can only make a difference to one person/child/soldier, then I'll be satisfied." Mine is the opposite: "If I fail even one person or do not show them that THEY can have confidence in themselves to accomplish missions, learn lessons, and handle life- I'll have been THE failure."
Do Not Pass Blame! You TOO are a screw up on some level... AND somewhere around the way there was a person who had the patience to adapt their lesson plan and teach you. We all fit into this category in some way- we just may not be aware of it, or sadly we may not be aware of the fact that a parent, mentor, teacher or leader HAS shown us how to acknowledge our strengths through our weaknesses and flaws.
It is simple to be a "my way or the highway" type. There are also leaders who lead and leaders who YELL! Chose one.
I can guarantee there IS no such thing as a model student/soldier; only invisible ineffectual ones... And who ever talks about them?
We, as instructors/leaders ACTUALLY encourage those students/soldier show "blend" into the wall paper and don't stand out. Why? It is individual strengths which makes us so unique and powerful as human beings.

Wisdom over knowledge.

I have been a student of life for a long time. Our educations continue long after we leave school. I would rather be a discerning person and have wisdom than "book knowledge." I know plenty of people who think they are so wonderful because they have a collection of degrees, but are total idiots in real life. I'm trying to raise my children to love learning and to be WISE.

Logical knowledge makes the best of life. Illogical knowledge makes us wrong and even evil. That is simply the moral knowledge for education to make proper progress. Knowledge must be logical otherwise education is wrong and will not work in theory and therefore in practice (unless it is accidental like in this World).

Education to me is what you search for and find whether or not it is in formal classes. I watched my uncle in his 60s explain the physics of movement to a 5 and 6 yr. old so they could understand. In that situation he was the teacher. My uncle had a 6th grade education.

I think that children can learn anything if they set their mind to it...and as a teacher, I like to make the lessons as close to their level of understanding as possible...they are discovering a whole new world at school, not just "writing and counting"...i suppose...

education separates us for the better, we should stress the use of education in the field and we should definitely stress common sense and decision making. all im saying is that we should make our future the kind of leader we would want
