Mick,
A gay lisp or quaverling lisp is actually not a lisp but refers to stereotypical speech attributes assigned to and sometimes heard in gay males. These attributes have proven difficult to define and quantify but seem independent of other variables in the phonology of the English language, such as accent and register.
I personally just think that it's added to put the extra cube in their "sweetness" .. JMO!

I wonder if there was a survey how this would lay out? What percentage of Gay men versus Straight men have lisps? I should think it's about the same ratio. I've heard a lot of straight men with almost unbearable lisps...and the standard gay joke often applies, 'How many S's in Please?'
But it applies to both.
It would be an interesting study.

This is a really good question.
I have absolutely nothing against gay men; but the truth is that they DO lisp often times. (Not all of them, of course).
My theory was always went kinda like this:
Gay society/culture. It may be a habit they pick up from other gay men, and the lisp itself may be to sound more feminine, or soft---or there may be another reason. Many gay men deny that lisps are prevalent in gay society, but most of us have working ears, and hear it rather prevalently, lol. I think it has become ingrained; a stereotype of the gay man that has been passed from one to another. The simple fact is, if you do not have a natural speech impediment, then you don't lisp. So my only conclusion is that it is a trait that is learned and made a habit.

I have met hundreds of gay men and can't think of one with a lisp but I know a few heterosexual men who lisp. It is a speech problem that some people have, it is not associated with sexuality.

Maybe it's to make a point in their sexuality.
E.g., makes you identifiable to other gay guys.
I don't have a lisp, btw.

thats not a lisp, a lisp is when you say "th" instead of "s", for example a person with a lisp would say "lithp" instead of lisp
