Very likely the backlighting has gone. Not overly expensive or difficult to replace.

Not quite sure what you mean.

Make sure your monitor is plugged in properly. Turn it on.

When your CPU is "off", the monitor should still display a message, eg "No signal".

When u get that screen working, how about joining new group bestofoz@yahoogroups.com

Ever see anything on your laptop screen? If not then your screen maybe dead. If you do, then maybe you've forced a resolution it can't cope with.

Or have you switched it to use the external monitor? Try the internal<->external monitor switch (fn-F4 probably) see if that fixes it.
