My cholesterol was 288. I took red yeast rice religiously for six months and it dropped to 208.
I still take it every night along with omega 3 fish oil. You'll want to get those coated or you're going to burp fish taste.
I also take pantethenic acid pills.
Eating oatmeal for breakfast every day is extremely good also. It can drop your cholesterol as fast as red yeast rice.
Those four things are listed as top tier to combat cholesterol in the computer at my local whole foods store.
Then there's also garlic but that works more long term, not immediately.
Also exercise can really help too.

That depends--how high is it? What is your weight and overall health, etc.?
If you've only moderately high levels, and are generally healthy otherwise, simple lifestyle changes might be enough: Get regular exercise and sleep, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (in a wide variety), reduce your intake of cholesterol-rich foods, eat cold-water fish regularly, etc. If that isn't enough, you could add fish oil and red yeast rice supplements to your routine.
Anything more and you may need medication. Consult your doctor, and consider seeing a naturopathic doctor for more detailed advice on lifestyle changes.
Good luck.

Oats, oatmeal or oats based mueslis would all help.
A vegetarian diet would overcome high cholesterol as high cholesterol comes from animal products.
Garlic (preferably odourless garlic), fish oil, hawthorn and lecithin would all help as well,

Take Flax Seed Oil. Taken with meals, it combines with the garbage and helps flush it out.
