Damn libs...

This question has nothing to do with 11 year olds or textile mills, lets stick with the 16 year olds and grocery stores

yea..depending on your state there are limitations on what teens can do. i manage a grocery store and can tell you there are many jobs were not allowed to hire someone young for.

Yes as every State has laws restricting the hours and types of jobs a 16 year old can do and they vary from State to State. Most states also require a valid work permit (which is issued by your school only if you have passing grades) or emancipated (living on your own).

An employer is free to not hire anyone one they want to, provided they do so in a way that there is no evidence of a pattern of discriminating against any EEOC protected group (if they employ 15 or more people that is).

My teen son has checked finding a job as he can get a work permit next month and found that most fast food places require a person to be at least 15 and most mall jobs require a worker to be 16 and only family owned restaurants seemed open to hiring a 14 year old and then, only a bus person and then working up to a waitperson...those might be better options for you to try.

Yeah! Damn Liberals and their stupid child labor laws! I mean really why in the world can't I send my 11 year old of to work in a textile mill or something!

Make em' work 14 hour days too, that way I can have some peace & quiet around here. And heck if they get hurt on the job I can just pop out another one it's not like children are valuable or anything.

dripping sarcasm by the way.

OK a 16 year old at a grocery store, you could be hired as a bag boy, other jobs in the store involve machinery that would be illegal for you to operate (box shredders & binders, meat slicers, and forklifts) Then there are cashier jobs, and for that they tend to hire someone who is already working for them or has worked the same type of job before without incident, due to the money handling.

In the UK I think it's illegal to discriminate solely based on age. But at 16 you'll have very limited work experience - so that would probably be a good reason to deny you a job. It's a bit of a catch-22 thing, the whole got no experience but no-one will employ you because you've got no experience so how can you ever get it. You just need to start at the bottom and work your way up - there are plenty of jobs which are pretty dull at first but which open the way for much more interesting jobs once you get a bit of experience behind you. Good luck!

Depends entirely on where the 16 year old is denied the job.

If it is in the UK, or Europe, and he can prove he has the ability or qualifications, it is illegal to deny him the job based on age.

If on the other hand, it is in the US, I have no idea anymore. I believe it depends on which state you are in. In Califonia I believe it says you cannot discriminate against someone above 40, but you can for someone under 18.

If it is in most of the rest of the world, yes, they can.

Yes, due to child labor laws in the U.S. but may work limited hours with proper permission or permit which also depends on time of year and how late a schedule maintained (is school in session) local laws may also apply.

Definitely. A lot of it is safety and insurance, or just plain discrimination. They may want someone older because, frankly, they're more responsible (in general, definitely not in all cases). Trust me, I'm 17, and I'm waiting to get a new job for when I turn 18, because there's a lot of better choices. Working at Papa Murphy's just sucked!

If you live in the US...

Yes. And I know several stores that won't hire minors. Apply for a job at a store that does hire minors.

If it weren't for those libs then you'd be making pennies an hour. Yeah yeah yea, you're young and have no responsibilities other than your own entertainment, so it doesn't matter if you make trash for minimum wage, but there are college students out there who have bills, and want your same job for survival reasons.

I wish I owned a company, cause even with those "damn libs" I could still find a way to ship your *** to a factory in Indonesia.

Damn kids.
