It means enlightenment or improvement. "For your edification" means something that will increase your knowledge or understanding on a subject.

I don't think of it just as spiritual building, though. That depends, I think, on your own personal philosophy or religion.

I feel that in order for a person to be complete, they have to build themselves in all areas. Body, mind and spirit, as the saying goes.

So, "for your edification" goes beyond simply passing on knowledge or information. It is actually strengthening you intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, etc, in a way that builds you up as a whole.

"edification" is the process of "edifying", a verb which literally means "build" or "build up" (compare the word "edifice", meaning "building").

Nowadays we may use it generally for anything we do that helps encourage, strengthen or improve someone else (the opposite, based on the same imagery, is "tear down"), especially by means of teaching/how you speak to them.

But the imagery originally refers specifically to SPIRITUALLY encouraging or improving.people (individually or as a group) The language comes from the New Testament, esp. from Paul's writings.

The ORIGIN of this specific expression (though you won't see this in your typical dictionary) is probably that of building the temple -- Paul (and others) compare the growth of the church (that is, 'the community of God's people') to the temple, the place where God was thought to meet with people. (The idea of God's people as a sort of "spiritual temple" is not, however, original with Paul. This idea is suggested in a number of places in the Old Testament.)

Note again that I am speaking here of the ORIGIN of the expression (as well as how you might find it used more often in churches). It is clearly used in a broader sense nowadays.
