Marriage traditionally and civilly has always been for heterosexuals. I'm too conventional to see that change. For homosexual couples there need to be civil laws that give them the same property rights, etc as married couples. A ceremony within the group is an option with no legal ramifications. Before the state found a way to profit from a church marriage, a marriage was recorded in the church records and usually in a family Bible. There is no reason why the church of Sappho or the Gay Gargoyle could not do the same. The state charges you a fee to issue a marriage license otherwise like any other business it would not be in the marriage business. In fact there is no reason why any other church that wanted to perform a special ceremony for gays and lesbians couldn't do so. The separation of church and state only goes as far as the pocket book. The gays and lesbians are basically fighting for the right to pay a fee to the state, a form of taxation if you will. Even a heterosexual couple could make their own private vows/covenant with God. The clergy only witness a marriage and a binding marriage between a couple can exist with God as it did before churches became institutions. A couple can also draw up legal papers giving property rights, etc. without being married. I know of a gay couple that bought a house and had the mortgage in both of their names. They wore matching rings and lived a married life in an upscale neighborhood. When the relationship ended one simply bought out the other's share of the house and no divorce was necessary. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Gays and lesbians would be wise to consider what they are doing. If they did private ceremonys within their community the state would step in all too soon to find a way to tax them. Sensationalism is not necessary to a union.

Marriage is a ceremony of unity and love, its should be open for all regardless. Small minded people who have not moved on with accepting non hetrosexual couples are taking away other human rights. No one, no body and no legal or powered body should have the right to take away human choices. In this day and age we accept and let loose so many horrible things in society but the rights for normal human to display their love is no allowed. I am hetrosexual and I am ashamed of the society we live in.

I am not gay, but I believe that gay people should be able to get married. I don't agree with gay people getting married I also think that god made man and a woman, but some people probably really can't help it from being gay. We live in a society were people have the right to purse happiness as long as they don't interfere in the rights of others then they can do as they are doing. So I will quote from some famous guy. " I don't believe in what the man says, but I will fight to the death so he can say it."

I think civil unions should give them all the legal benefits of a marriage. Technically a marriage is performed in a church, and the church should not be required to perform a ceremony against it's beliefs.

Marriage is a legal and sometimes religious union of two people. Rather or not they are heterosexual, or homosexual. Every citizen of the United States of America has the same rights. Just because they are gay should not take away their rights to get married.

People are people; gay or straight, but God is God ; right or wrong. I am tolerant, and I do not hate anyone, but there are wills and life insurance policies that allow gay partners to include their lovers so why get married. I do not condemn gay people into hell or where ever, because that's not my place, but I do believe that this is wrong.

What is marriage?
What is civil union? Aren't there some people who get "married" by a Justice of the Peace? Is that really marriage, or is it a civil union?
Does it matter?
I think the argument has been blown out of proportion.

Marriage is a private contract between two individuals. Why should the government prevent two consenting adults from forming a contract as they see fit?

Homosexuality is a psychological problem which should be treated to let them live a normal life.
When we allow two persons of same sex to get married in fact we are leaving them alone to live with their illness. They are human and they don't deserve this. Its unnatural way of life we are asking them to live.
