Ha! I enjoyed your post. There are incerdible women writers out there. There are incredible main chracters who are female. I always thought it sad that girls will read a certain book with male or female characters, but boys do not (although, the boys learn it from parents at an early age)
Good writing is just good writing. A good character is just a good character. I like to read both because it adds variety to my reading. And I get to peer into the mind of the males of our species...oooo! That and men seem concerned with the oddest things. This I learned from male fiction writers...of course I have the same thought about women when I read chick lit. I couldn't imagine being that concerned with men as dear Bridgit Jones.

Reading 'chick lit' will only help you learn about the fantasy life of the readership it is aimed at. Reading the sort of womens magazines you find in the doctor's waiting room will teach you the same. In fact, there is even a chance that if you read the medical queries on the problem pages, you will learn some biology, and if you read the other questions you will find some good comedy.

Their are some really good female authors and there are some very good, well written books aimed specifically for the female market.
It doesn't matter who has written the book or what the subject is, if you like it or are intrested in it, read it.
If you go to a doctor's surgery and are waiting for your appointment, you will see plenty of men reading women's magazines while they are waiting.

Book has got no gender. If it is well written any one will read it.
There is no harm for having specific books for special interest to women or men.The best fashion designers for women are often Men.Man and Woman are complementary. and not substitutes.
