For your own home, you would need a wireless router, and you would need a wireless card for each laptop.

A very common standard wireless router is the Linksys WRT54GL unit. It can handle both wired pc's and also allow wireles laptops at the same time. About $50.

Laptop use a network card. Some models this goes inside the laptop and the card is a lot cheaper. If it needs the external type, the most common is the pcmcia slot version something similar to the Buffalo Turbo G for $25 at Best Buy.

Make sure both router and the pc cards you get are b/g (meaning they can do either one, b ot g). THis helps support older pc's, printers you might try to use, visiting relatives or friends, etc.

Passwords are set at the router, if it is set to ask for one, the laptop must have it in their settings too. Many of us leave it open due to the short range) so whoever drives by can get us while they are parked in the driveway. Never been a problem.

Assuming its a laptop is has a WiFi card in it.
Yes you'll need the wireless if you dont want the cable in it. Password the routers internet so other people cant use it (unwanted visitors) or you could filter the macs and leave it without a connecting password. once you get the password in your wireless utility software it'll remember it until you manually disconnect from it.

Your wireless card can pick up wireless signals.

Its best you look for prices on your own for the cheapest But remember cheaper is usually less range and bandwidth.
