A person with mild mental retardation is just like any other person. They have feelings, wants, needs, etc. A person who is mentally retarded is a person first, just like everyone else. My son tends to focus on only one thing at a time. He will go along with whatever people suggest, and although he has hobbies, when he starts a new one, he drops the old one.
He is perfectly aware when people make fun of him, but doesn't know what to do about it.
He knows he can't drive, but did get a learners permit. It took him four attempts over a six month interval, but he's very proud of it. Nothing is heightened about him. When he's alone, he sits on his computer and plays online games.
