It depends on the type of fish. Some aquarium species only live 2-3 years, but others can live well over 20. Some pond fish can live to be over 100.

If you want to know about a particular type of aquarium fish, look through the list on the righ-hand side of this website, and click on the name of the ones you want to know about. At the bottom of the page for each, there's a box that will tell you about how long each type should live: http://www.fishlore.com/

Well goldfish (outoor kind) have been known to live for up to 200 years apparently, but the average indoor goldfish can live up to 30 years. Other fish like danios rarely live longer than 5 years. Generally the bigger the fish, the longer it lasts.

A lot depends on how old the fish was when you acquired it, as well as its health when you got it.

I had Green Severums that were purchased as babies and they lived for over 10 years! I have a Silver Dollar that was purchased as a baby and he is 13!

Keep an eye on water quality and overfeeding. I've found that is where a lot of problems start.
I think it depends on the species as well.

Sometimes you unknowingly buy a sick fish to begin with. Many places offer a money-back policy within a certain period with receipt.
