I didn't when I needed to get into my car.
That happened to me twice, once a kind police officer helped me out and the second time I had to call a locksmith.
Yes, you can be a burglar that way and gain illegal entrance, but there is a clear record of if and the locksmith will make a good eye witness, so it is not that good of a plan. Now if you tried to get into MC Hammer's estate or Jay Leno's house the locksmith SHOULD be asking some questions, but for just a simple home or apartment job most crooks are too sneaky and shy to call a locksmith to do the dirty work.

He's opening himself up for a lawsuit if he opens a door that doesn't belong to you, think about it, he could be arrested and lose his license.
What they've done in the past is call the apartment manager if your wallet is in the unit, then the manager is there when the unit is opened or, the police come as a "welfare check" and stand by while the home is opened, then you have to get your I.D. and show it while the police are there.
