The only place you can work legally without the employer paying you is as an intern in the Congress or White House. Real companies will get into trouble if they don't pay you.

Why look for a non-paying job? Look for a paid intern position. Money always help in my opinion. And, a "start-up" may not be a good idea. If they fail it will follow you for life, and no one likes to hire someone from a failed business. You can be branded a loser -- they blame everyone in a failed company. And your name is assocaiated with that company forever.
