Pains are different for each pregnancy, if your water breaks it is a sure thing to go to the hospital. I had pain and went twice to be sent back home told that it was false labor. My daughter has her kids born quickly, my labor lasted 16 hours with her. Like I said everyone is different. There is no sure way to know. Use your own judgment . It is better to be safe than sorry. I felt foolish each time I got sent back home to suffer more, but I wasn't willing to risk doing it any other way and I am glad I did it MY way. Timing pains is good advice, but it is not a guaranteed way of knowing how much time you have before your baby is born.

They dont necessarily need to be painful. Once you have regular contractions then you should start to time them. Often times they dont get stronger and painful until a few hours into labor.
