I've just started collecting and was wondering what sort of success people have had. At my place they can be put inside or on a balcony, which gets filtered sun but is not too intense.

Sydney is great for many varieties of orchids. I've had terrific success in two different locations with several varieties of cymbidium, and know people who raise slipper orchids and singapore orchids as well.

I also have a number of different types of native and rock orchids, all perfectly happy in the local environment.

Personal suggestion is start out trying what you know and love, and then diversify a few at a time.

Good luck and best wishes :-)
