I set the thermostat for as low as 65 degrees sometimes and I still get nowhere close. I'm pretty sure the thermostat is reading correctly just by the overall feeling in the house.

It sounds like maybe your condensing unit isn't working right. you might have to blow it out by using a tank of co2 or something along those lines. without more info its hard to determine but it seems like that the air isnt getting that cold.

Yes, your thermostat may be correct...

Have you checked the intake filter? It should be behind a big vent somewhere in the house or garage.

If you turn it off for one day and then turn it back on, this will allow the condenser to defrost, then set the thermostat to 76.

Also it could be that your A/C could need a charge.

Well aside from that it is summer and a A/C can just die from over use, you should look in the phone book or online for a reputable A/C repair Co. they have service contracts for about 400 or less a year and they Guaranteee to keep it running clean and cool.

If you rent your home the landlord should pay all costs or you may deduct them from the rent with your receipt.

Could be a slow leak in the compressor, or the unit is old,
or not big enough to cool your home.
We have two units one had a slow leak on the one downstairs and it wouldnt cool. It ran all day long, didnt cool and found out that it had frozen up from lack of freon.
The one upstairs was undersized to cool the area, we had it replaced and now we are cool..:)
These are just a few of the problems we had.

If it is an old unit sometimes the insulation falls. If you are getting any cool air at all then that is a possibilty, but if no air is cool yep you better call your A/C man because you could burn up the unit. Leave it off until you have it checked out

tell him that the subsequent a/c guy that comes out needs to do a leak seek on the equipment. A/C gadgets are a sealed equipment and should no longer flow low on freon (provided that there is a leak).

It needs some freeon.
