Pirate Shirt Dot Com by Shannon Risk, available from Amazon online at $16.95, is a fun read.
Book Description:
Something unusual is happening at 57 Grove Street in Bangor, Maine. Within those fine Victorian walls, the ladies of Pirate Shirt Dot Com insist they are not running a dating service—it’s a romantic adventure company. Their quirky business comes complete with a male pirate model on all of their publicity materials. In the middle of helping customers tap their greatest romantic fantasies, however, Susana Hammond, her sister, Sophie Hammond, and their friend, Gabby Killeen, soon find themselves ensconced in their own passionate adventures. For spunky Susana, a handyman she calls “Yummy Tool Belt Guy” brings new meaning to home decoration. Gabby’s fiancé, a soldier, comes home to her amid tragedy. A pilot—not a pirate—woos sophisticated Sophie’s heart. Will these women find their own happiness with their modern-day lusty love pirates, or will they be out to sea?

I highly recommend The Earth My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler. It has won a ton of YA awards. It was a very good, refreshing YA book with a great character in it. You can read a sample on her website. Pax - C

Some of my favorite books:

The Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner
The Queen of Attolia, by Megan Whalen Turner
The King of Attolia, by Megan Whalen Turner
Above is a trilogy set in a world that's similar to ancient Greece, for there are gods and goddesses, but there are also rifles and pocketwatches. It's all about a boy, a thief, who is so animated without being too over-the-top or annoying and his journeys. I can't say too much about his journeys because he's a trickster and the identity he weaves for himself changes dramatically, and that's the best part.

Troy, by Adele Geras
I haven't read this book in a while, but I loved it when I was younger a few years ago. It's about the 10 year battle of Troy, right when it's about to end. It is about love, but it doesn't dominate the book.

If I Should Die Before I Wake, by Han Nolan
Literally a girl neo-Nazi is nearly killed in an accident and (I believe) ends up in a Jewish hospital. She's lying in bed, close to death, and has these visions of a Jewish girl's past in the Holocaust and her experiences.

Pirates!, by Celia Rees
This does have a smidgen of love, but it merely sets the protagonist's plot, but doesn't control every paragraph. It's about a girl who is sent away to marry a man she hates and she runs away from him with her slave friend and the two become female pirates and ravage the seas.

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi
Another pirate story. About a girl who leaves England for America (or vice versa, I can't remember), and is the only passenger on the boat (the only other people are crew.) She soon finds herself in the middle of a crew mutiny and even she has to choose sides and become pirate-ish.

The Princess Bride, by William Goldman
A comedic book about a girl who loves her servantboy, but he's captured by pirates and dies. So she's forced to marry the future prince and gets captured by three hilarious, quirky folk.
