They have always been a super power, and we sure can't take them on number wise. We found that out in Korea! Only the front row had weapons. The others would pick them up when the ones in front were killed! They just over ran positions!
In June 2005, it was reported by boxun.com that the People's Republic of China would build a US$362 million Future Chinese aircraft carrier with a displacement of 78,000 tonnes, to be built by the enclosed Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. The ship is supposed to carry around seventy 4th- generation jet aircraft (it may carry 5th-generation jet aircraft when available) The report was denied by Chinese defence official Zhang Guangqin.[15][verification needed] Previous talks to purchase an aircraft carrier from Russia and France have not borne fruit, although the Chinese did buy the Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag
We are not even in the top 3 ship builders, but China is, as is S Korea and Japan!

I think it's only temporary. Twenty years ago it's was Japan who was eating our lunch in the market place. China is the country that now is producing all the products that the west wants because their labor costs are low. As their economy strengthens to a certain point as Japan's did their labor costs will begin to rise. Their citizens will have disposable income and their cost of living will rise as there is more money being moved around. In twenty years production will move on to another country with cheap labor like India.

A little disturbing considering they don't have food, chemical, and other hazardous material regulation on a wide scale. If 90% of our imports come from there it frightens me as to how many more cases of cancers and rare nervous disorders we will see occuring on a wide scale. Hopefully they will not be the type of country that wants to spread it's way of life to the primitive people of the world...wait a minute...

Well they are only still a regional power. They lack a blue water navy. They have no operating aircraft carrier. THey lack advance fighter, and the ones they will be producing soon would be technologically behind us. THey lack amphibous vessels. Their troops lack training and experience in war. THey do have nuclear weapons, but lack ability to retaliate towards a nuclear strikes and it takes hours to program their nukes to hit a target, which gives us time to nuke them first.
If they becaome a super power, they deserve it for being responsible. They got their because the US is irresponsible enough to sell advance technology to everyone, including Missile technology to China. We are pushing them to take part in police actions in foreign wars so they would gain the experience in invading a country.

I'm glad that the Chinese abandoned Communism years ago. They were eating their children a few decades ago because they were so desperate for food. Now, they're a prosperous country with an expanding middle class and a government that is doomed to eventually fall.

I find it funny how people keep referring to it as "THE" new superpower instead of A new superpower. China has a long a windy road if they expect to become a superpower. Even IF they did become one it wouldn't bother me much as long as the US' standard of living doesn't decrease.

China can't even compare with us. We have a much wealthier society than the Chinese. The Chinese government might be big, but it's still a very poor country.

I cannot stand it. They make lousy products (Ever wonder why Wal-Mart and others have such gravy return policies?), treat their workers like crap, and pollute the hell out of the place. Not to mention the fact that they are communists. I would prefer Japan or Germany (our "reformed" old enemies).
