It sort of makes sense as is, but you might want to make the relationship between "farming" and "wealth" a little clearer. If you don't mind changing your underlying metaphor, how about "Farming soon became a pathway to wealth," or something like that?

Farming became a way that some farmers who grew certain crops or had enough land on which to grow, could use this to get money out of the government by the fist fulls so NOT to grow, pushing up prices.
