voodoo (v´d) [from the god Vodun], native W African religious beliefs and practices that also has adherents in the New World. Voodoo believers are most numerous in Haiti, where voodoo was granted official religious status in 2003, and in Benin, where the religion has had official recognition since 1996. Similar observances are found in Jamaica, under the name pocomania, and in parts of the United States and in the Guianas. A highly developed voodooistic religion known as candomblé is found in Brazil.

Although the magical aspects of voodoo are related to beliefs and practices found throughout the world, the basic features of voodoo were brought by slaves from W Africa, particularly those from what is now Benin, where the beliefs are still widespread (as many as 60% of the people of Benin practice voodoo). Voodoo contends that all of nature is controlled by spiritual forces which must be acknowledged and honored through offerings and animal sacrifice; ecstatic trances (a means of communicating with the gods and spirits) and magical practices play an important role in its ritual. In the New World, Christian elements were introduced, and the African deities became identified with various saints. At various time attempts have been made to suppress voodoo, but voodoo survived and continues to flourish.

hope this would help you, thanks!

Voodoo (also spelled Voodou, Vodou, or in much recent academic writing Vodoun) is mostly associated with the country of Haiti (the only successful slave revolution in history) and New Orleans, Louisian (as a result of the mass resettlement of former residents of Haiti when the Louisiana territory was still a French possession). The traditions are an amalgamation of beliefs from several West African Nations (Benin, Togo, Ghana, etc.) and from a variety of tribal groups (Iwi, Mina, Fon, etc.) and Christianity (mostly Catholicism). Often the slaves were prevented from worshiping as they had in their home land and as a result adopted catholic saints and other religious figures to represent the spirits and deities they were prohibited from worshiping. The common associations such as zombies and voodoo dolls while a part of the religion are by no means the sum total of the faith. Zombies are a particularly fascinating aspect of Voodoo. A zombie is created by administering a poison composed of, among other things, blowfish toxin. This toxin lowers breathing, heart rate and brain function to a near death state and the subject would then be buried and mourned. The most common source of the poisoning would be a family member. The victim would later be exhumed and administer a powerful hallucinogenic (usually Datura spp.) and taken to a plantation to be used as slave labor. As the culture has a place for zombies the family of the 'deceased' would want nothing to do with them should they return, they basically become a non-person. For the account of how the source of zombie poisoning was discovered and other aspects of Haitian culture see the book 'The Serpent and the Rainbow' by Wade Davis (the anthropologist who researched it; PLEASE avoid the movie as it is directed by Wes Craven of Friday the 13th fame and is nothing more than a horror movie that butchers the incredible story of navigating a culture that is often not accessible to uninitiated members). As an anthropologist and theologian who has spent some time in Haiti I can vouch that Voodoo has many amazing and beautiful aspects and does not deserve the bad name that has come to be associated with it.

Vodou is a spiritual tradition which originated in Haiti during the period of French colonial slavery. Africans of many ethnic lineages were transported by force to Haiti, primarily to serve as agricultural slaves. The original Taino and Carib peoples of Haiti were exterminated in the invasion by the
Spanish. During this historical period, Europeans from France and other countries, including pro-Stuart deportees from Scotland, settled in Haiti.

There are denominations in Vodou, just as in many other religions. The first, and most widely known, is the orthodox Vodou. In this denomination, the Dahomean rite is given a position of primacy, and initiations are conducted based mainly on the Dahomean model. A priest or priestess recieves the asson, a ceremonial rattle, as an emblem of
priesthood. In this rite, a priest is known as a Houngan or sometimes Gangan, a priestess is known as a Mambo.

The above is just barely scraping the surface.

artwork out your person salvation with worry and trembling. there are numerous solutions right here and admittedly all have their very own ideals. the place is our heart at? can we worship Him in Spirit and in reality? there's no longer something incorrect with burning a candle or having Christmas on Christmas day alongside with your pals and kin. Christianity isn't a faith to me it fairly is no longer even a manner of existence. this is existence. i can not be ordained by utilising something or every physique different than Christ Jesus. merely on the day that the Lord tells me i won't do which will I stop to do it. no longer something in authentic Christianity has come from any pagan ritual. Christ became before something even created. there's no longer something defiled in Him. thank you and God Bless. :) one extra ingredient: Christians must be staring at and Praying recently fairly than be caught up discussing or arguing approximately trivial concerns. The day of the Lord is coming quickly and there is no longer the rest that the enemy needs than for us to be divided. he's after all eager to smash Christ and the Church. permit the Lord be our decide. He is conscious the thank you to handle us all, singly. Judgement shall come first to the Church. get waiting, oh boy!!
