I have Windows XP and my computer has been acting up lately. I've backed up all of my files that I need and I have the restore cd's (bootable cd?) I need detailed step-by-step instructions on how to remove my old operating system so I can put the new one on.

when I get into BIOS I'm lost. I looked uder every "boot" related category, but I don't see anything that I can change. Also, my D: drive doesn't seem to be working so I put the CD into the E: drive and it wont work from there... I'm not sure.

If it's a windows CD, you just insert it and restart the PC, select boot from CD, and follow the instructions
Tell it you want to install Windows XP, and it will ask where, in there you will se a list of partitions, Delete the partition windows is currently on, and create a new one. Format it and install it there.

If its a manafacturer CD then it should be realitivly similar. Just insert it and Restart.

If the CD dosent boot before windows does, then you need to change the boot order in the BIOS and put your CD drive at the top

Boot the computer using the XP CD.
You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER
On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and thenenter and format that drive

you could reformat your hard drive and just reinstall the operating system later
this should be relatively simple
when you rcomputer starts go to the BIOS settings and go to the harddrive and hit format
it willl erase everythign on the hard drive...everything
just pop in the OS cd when ur done re formating it and it will install xp again
or you could just put in the cd and restart teh computer
then go to the BIOS and in boot order put CD first
then it will restart and the CD will boot so you can reformat XP from there it might be a little easier for you but its essentially the same thing
...your welcome ^_^

You format the hard drive, using the boot CDs. Alternatively, you can use a third-party tool like the Ultimate Boot CD to format your hard drive.

You should be able to put in the disk for the new OS and do a clean install. It will delete everything and start you on the process of installing the new one. If it won't do it you'll need to get a Disk washer/cleaner for your HDD. They are pretty cheap and can be found at most PC stores.

I need to reboot from the disc, I strongly suggest getting in touch with your support. Often they can remotely do this even if your pc is out of warranty. Good luck and I hope this helps.
