There is an intermittant shift switch located on the bracket to which your lower shift cable is attached which may be hanging up and cutting off engine . Either the upper cable from the shifter control is out of adjustment or the lower cable has to much resistance and needs replacing

Mercruiser has a engine cut out switch when going in an out of gear it's on the shift cable next to the carb see if it's working. Or out of adj.

bad fuel filters usually cause cutting out under a load not when put in gear. However they are cheap and easy. My first guess is the idle is to low. But it's just a guess without more info easy to try though.
