We mistakenly left dishes in the dishwasher for a few days... When I opened it, there were small black spots of mold on a few of the dishes. I sent it thru the cycle once with heat drying and most of the spots did not disappear. Can I just dump a few tablespoons of clorox in the dishwasher before it begins to get rid of the mold?

Thank you in advance, any advice would be appreciated.

Just make a 1/2 and 1/2 solution of bleach and water and give your dishwasher a spray and wipe. You can also use a solution of 2tsp tea tree oil (in the pharmacy at Wal-Mart) in 12oz water any spray that on. Let it it a couple minutes then wipe it away. That stuff smells better than clorox and is anti-fungal. Neither will hurt your dishwasher but the bleach should be rinsed so it doesn't interact with your dishwasher cleaning agent.

I did this and I can save you some time.

Hand wash the mold off the dishes and then if you want, run them through a cycle again. I am a nit picker when it comes to clean dishes and after three cycles with different chemicals to solve the problem, I decided to stop being lazy and wash the dishes by hand. I then ran them through a cycle to sanitize.

Or keep trying the dish washer. Then when your eating a meal, take a mouthful of food, hold one of the forks in your mouth, close your eyes and repeat this in your head three times:

"I wonder if the bleach got all the mold off this fork?"

Well, you could... but I have to wonder if there is some greater problem with your washer's drying cycle if it allows mold to grow on your dishes.

If your going to leave dishes in the dishwasher, makes sure its closed, so the drying cycle continues to run.

I agree with the others as far as not needing to disinfect it. If you pour a little in the bottom it's really not going to do anything but sit there and drain when the rest of the water drains ~ I don't really see the logic in that. I would take a spray bottle, fill with water and add a capful or two of bleach. Spray the interior down good then run it. White vinegar is also a great alternative disinfectant and is less hamful than bleach.

Place a cup or dish in the top rack of your dishwasher. Fill it with bleach. Add your normal detergent and run the cycle.

Dishwasher detergents have chlorine in them so you shouldn't have to add bleach to the wash. Wash again with dishwasher soap without the heat dry...this will just cause the food to crust over more.

Yeah, for as long as I can remember my Mom has put Clorox in her dishwasher. She says that it kills all the bacteria and everything .
