I don't think a lot of people turn to drugs or alcohol after a breakup. Some people "let loose" for a while to deal with the pain and as a means of "reclaiming" a bit of independence by indulging in things they wouldn't have while coupled. Even for those folks it's usually not a lengthy thing and they are often okay after a month or so.

Not all of them turn towards drugs after a breakup or divorce, but drinking as well. The reason why they do that is to numb the pain and run away from the reality. I was one of them (but with drinking and anti-depression for three months) until I turn myself in for help and went to a Christian Divorce care.... it slowly get me back to where I used to be but the pain is always still with me but lately it taught me to hold on through life. Now I am all good and to start my life over again and try to let the One (God) lead me through this pain.

The fact of the matter is drugs feel good. This is the only reason why people use them. When a person is down or upset, they are more likely to use drugs for their good effects. Drugs are so good that you stop caring about anything else except the drugs oh and coming down, that really sucks!!
Now alcohol is a bit of a different kind of thing, because with alcohol you don't really feel good. People who drink too much tend to take pleasure in their own sorrow, so for them, it still feels that good.

Breakup is hard to do, it is a loss of hope , a loss of something you cared about, and sometimes a loss of self esteem. It can be very painful for people who have experienced rejection in their life before, that being the route cause. Others handle it well, because they are accustomed to being treated with respect and love, and so that is how they treat themselves. Best thing for a break up is to take care of yourself, pamper yourself, treat yourself like you have been injured, after all it is just an injury.

I am afraid that too many people turn to drugs while married, and that leads to divorce...not the other way around.

I think this if for the weak people who doesn't want to deal with life.......They can't really respect themselves so therefor they don't care about themselves leaving no room to care and respect for other people. They just give up and quit...

to numb the pain.. same with alcohol or another person.. yes, very dangerous.. as we know, problems just wait for you to "sober up" and perhaps get worse from the "numbing agent"...

I wasn't aware that they do. I don't know of anyone like that. Guess I live a sheltered life - sort of.
