The Egyptian Phoenix, which lives in Arabia, and comes every 500 years to built a nest on an obelisk where it lays an egg, and when the egg starts hatching, it dies in its own flames, and is reborn from the egg. The obelisk is the Egyptian symbol of the first ray of sun light striking the earth, and when built, is usually covered in gold or electrum.

They can be Male or Female

In China the Phoenix (si ling) was one of a number of animals that were worshipped. A common depiction was of it attacking snakes with its talons and its wings spread. In fact images of the Phoenix have appeared in China for over 7000 years, often in jade and originally on good-luck totems.

Although during the Han period (2200 years ago) the Phoenix was used as a symbol depicting the direction south shown as a male and female Phoenix facing each other.

It was also used to symbolize the Empress in a pairing with a dragon where the dragon represents the Emperor. Here the Phoenix represented power sent from the heavens to the Empress.

truthfully it is suppose to switch each time. it doesn't lay an egg it dies in a funeral pyre, and from the "ashes" it comes back to life as the other sex that is why there is only one at a time.
